Forester's Tent Part 1

"CAMPCRAFT: 3. TRAIL EQUIPMENT III: Make and use a sleeping bag or a tent suitable for your climate...." - R4LA Rover Ranger Award Requirements

Our Chief Rover Scout encouraged me to pick up a copy of the 1946 edition of the Explorer Scout Manual. It's a fantastic reference for outdoorsmanship, and tells you just about everything you need to know about building a backpacking kit from scratch.

In "Chapter 3: Shelter Equipment," it references several kinds of tents a scout can build, and the one that interested me the most was the Forester's Tent. It has this to say about it:

"It's a good 'cold weather' tent, having an open front facing the fire, yet with flaps if desired. It is cut from a flat rectangle of canvas. The pointed hood, which is optional, gives added protection from rain and gathers and holds heat from a reflector fire."

Unfortunately, compared to the other tent designs in the book, it goes into little detail on how to lay it out.

PTS 16 mile hike and PTS completion

It's been quite awhile since I've updated here! I've been Rovering with the AMRC Crew and meeting with the R4LA Round Table every quarter.

I've hit a huge milestone as a Rover Knight by completing the Practical Training Strip. This past weekend I completed my overnight hike, which was the last thing I needed to complete for the PTS.

Below is a video of my report for the hike!

I've been preparing for this hike for almost a year, training with a backpack and studying wild edibles. It's been an adventure!

With that completion I've been awarded the PTS and can move on to other awards and adventures!

I'm on a Quest

Part of Rovering is questing, and I'm on a quest to bring Rovering to more people. In do doing I've been creating promitional stuff in anticipation of formally recruiting others. This includes brochures and displays I'll put on a table in a booth or another venue. I was thinking I would get pins for those who apply to R4LA on the spot!

I would also have water and treats on the table, along with paperwork stuff. The next step is deciding where I'd want to set up a recruiting table.

In this process I've created charts. One to compare some traits between scouting associations when it comes to adult scouting, and one showing a basic layout of the R4LA traditional scouting progression program.

Exciting stuff!
